The outdoor patio and green roof are home\nto wind turbines and photovoltaic solar panels with views of\nnature and the St. Andrews and West Bay. Additionally, students\nhave access to labs, where among other projects, students are\nworking on converting fossil-fuel vehicles to an electric power\nsource. They are also planning a marketable solution for the\ngovernment and public and private transit institutions that do\nnot realize their potential for a fleet of green vehicles. In other\ndepartments, students can build robots, use 3-D printers, and\nexperiment with windmills and even new culinary technologies.\nAt the Entrepreneurial Development Center, the ATC houses a\ncommunity training room and CNC machines to which students\nworking on projects have full access. \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe ATC furniture is critical to its mission, and was designed\nto accommodate students and faculty who both bring their own\ndevices and use technology infrastructure that GCSC invested in\nas part of their \u201clearning convergence\u201d environment. \u201cLearning\nconvergence\u201d refers to areas where students can work or have class\nwhile collaborating or using information technologies. Following\nthis thread, the ATC has no corridors in its buildings; all floors are\nopen architecture and open, collaborative zones where students\ncan gather around technology clusters. \t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tJoe Sorci, director of design at Florida Architects, was the head\narchitect for the entire project, and as the building progressed,\nit became clear that cutting edge furnishings for the ATC were\ngoing to be difficult to find. As the ATC goal was to optimize\nthe utility and flexibility of every space within the building,\nstandardized, traditional furniture would not prove satisfactory.\nIn March 2011, Mr. Sorci contacted SMARTdesks, a collaborative\nfurniture company committed to meeting the needs of the 21st\ncentury classroom. The company followed up with sample\nfurniture, including the unique, reconfigurable Exchange table,\nas well as the HorizonLine and Pi tables. In June 2011, at the\nNEOCON trade show, Sorci continued searching for the ideal\nfurniture, but found that while most other companies also touted\ntheir furniture as \u201ccollaborative,\u201d few lived up to his expectations.\nThe company\u2019s design team engaged in dialogue with Florida\nArchitects to assess the very space-specific needs of the ATC,\nlaunching a synergistic relationship that would ultimately lead to\nthe completion of a world-class facility. \n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBecause the ATC needs varied widely\u2014from audio-visual tools to\nwireless connectivity to moveable furniture\u2014Gulf Coast put out\nan Invitation to Negotiate (ITN) to contract out various parts of\nthe project. Sorci explained that instead of organizing a binding\nbid contract, the ITN would engage potential suppliers and enable a discourse between the architects and furniture designers.\nHe explained, \u201cIt really came down to finding the right pieces of\nfurniture. Because they\u2019re only going to buy it one time, it had to\nbe the right product for the project.\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSorci also did not want to wait for the furniture to arrive\nbefore realizing it wasn\u2019t suitable for the space. His goal was\nsimple: interactions between furniture suppliers, the architects,\nand the school board would be as collaborative and solutionsoriented as the curriculum soon to take place at the ATC. He\nneeded a company willing to take on the challenge of integrating\naudio-visual technology into a wireless environment, and he was\nhaving a difficult time finding assistance in designing changeable\nconfigurations of furniture with the audio-visual necessary hardwiring systems. The ATC board sought to leave the \u201cold\u201d standard\nof education behind, but to do so customized, organized orders\nwere crucial to success. \t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe Design Team immediately began working collaboratively\nwith Sorci to achieve the custom vision for the ATC. The team met twice per week for several months in 2012. Director of\nDesign Michele McHenry said that they covered \u201call the details\nfor every component in every room.\u201d The scope of the project\nwas enormous. The company accounted for conference tables\nand collaboration centers, caf\u00e9 tables, and seating to generate a\nunified and flexible workspace that would soon define the interior\nsophistication of the ATC. Regarding the comprehensive design\nprocess for each and every room, GCSC President James Kerley\nsaid: \u201cIf it was not highly utilized space, then forget it.\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIn October of 2013, over 500 students, faculty, staff,\nadministrators, architects, and designers attended the grand\nopening of the ATC. Six years after initial planning and three\nyears after breaking ground, the building is finally ready for fulltime use. President Kerley told local news channel 7, \u201cOur goal\nwas to try to be one of those top 2 or 3 schools, and I think we\u2019ve reached that. That\u2019s a great feeling for our faculty and staff\nand our students and our community. This is the community\u2019s\nbuilding.\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe design team developed furniture that, according to Sorci,\n\u201cfits the style and statement of the building.\u201d For example,\nthe Exchange tables are comprised of modular units that each\nhouses a FlipIT mechanism for secure display and presentation\nof computers and monitors. These modules can be arranged\ninto hexagon, pinwheel, wave, and triangular combinations,\ndepending on the needs of the students and educators for each\nproject. In another area of the building, a scaled down version of\nExchange, called the iGroup, serves other students\u2019 needs. \t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tDr. Ariba Garmin, Director of E-learning said, \u201cThe furniture\nprovided allows staff and student to create any learning\nenvironment you want. You almost don\u2019t see it at all because\nyou can move it around to suit your needs.\u201d One example of this\nflexibility in the ATC is the third floor boardroom table for 28\npeople. The table is comprised of fixed and foldable Nesta tables\nthat can be collapsed and used elsewhere, thereby giving the space\nmulti-functionality for various meetings, classes, and disciplines.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

They are going to figure it out for themselves. In\norder to keep pace with the current generation of students, you\nhave to change your pedagogy to keep their interest.\u201d Allan added\nthat the best way to teach is to have students learn as a group; she\nbelieves these furnishings allow her to meet her own pedagogical\ngoals.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWendy Payne, an Associate Professor of Business Technology,\nteaches in the Vista Collaborative Space; Payne noted, \u201cI came\nfrom a space that used cubicles. Conversations with your\nneighbors were not all that easy. What is nice in the space that\nSMARTdesks has provided is that everyone can see one another.\nAll eight students can work in teams, in pairs or as groups. All of\nmy classes are not lecture-based. They are working groups that we\nassign problems to. They have the tools and can read; therefore\nthe hard work is solving the problem.\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIn the \u201ccommunity training room,\u201d Pi tables offer a modern\ntwist to the typical lecture configuration of desks. While the\ntables are usually arranged in long arcs for easy visibility and\ncomfortable use of laptops, the Pi tables can also be organized\ndifferently should the need arise for another arrangement.\nAntonio Adessi, assistant professor of Business and Technology commented on this flexibility: \u201cWhat we are doing in the digital\nmanufacturing, electronic engineering and product design\nwith students is giving them that creative edge and experience\nthat most employers require. Pre-engineering ATC student John Freeman said, \u201cIt\u2019s\nexciting! You walk in here and you feel like you are a part of\nsomething! I\u2019m from this area, so I know how valuable it is for\nus to have this building. It gives us a broader band of education.\nIt offered to bring new businesses to this area and caters to the\nbusinesses we already have.\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
