\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe Technology Services Team at Gallaudet visited the nearby\ncompany showroom in Linthicum, MD, and started a collaborative\ndialogue with company president Jeffrey Korber, in order to\ndetermine which furniture offered the communication tools and\nlearning platforms the school sought. \t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAt the meeting, the Gallaudet faculty and IT specialists employed\nan interpreter who used American Sign Language in conjunction\nwith a conference room phone and a computer station webcam.\nAll of these technology supports were already readily available for\nuse in the Piano\u2122 conference table at the showroom. Additionally,\nthe arrangement of the table and the space made it easier for the\nhearing and deaf participants to converse. \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe Design Team was invited to the Harkin Computer Lab to\nsee the space and to further understand the students\u2019 and educators\u2019\nneeds. While Gallaudet educators had resourcefully optimized their\nspace, it became evident that the design was dated and not operating\nto full potential. Converted rectangular tables were arranged in long\nrows, creating a congested feel. Cramped study carrels were too small\nfor two people to share the space to converse with others online\nusing sign language.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Collaborating on the Cloud:\nGallaudet Creates a New Space<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAfter assessing the necessary ergonomic and spatial updates Harkin\nComputer Lab needed, the Design Team began its daily practice\nof design collaboration. As a virtual office company, design\nteam members are geographically distributed across the United\nStates, and professional interior designers, engineers, and factory\nproduction managers routinely communicate using the Design\nCloud. Via this platform, company members and the customer\ncan communicate and share ideas, floor plans, and files in one\nconvenient location. \t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGallaudet University and company project managers easily\nuploaded and shared documents, drawings and support information,\norganized in one location, including time stamps on every upload.\nThis made working with the members of Gallaudet a smooth\nexperience for both company and client because much of the projectbased communication was written and expressed graphically. Design\nCloud allowed the Gallaudet team to communicate internally with\nconstructive input from the company, which ultimately led to the\nfinal consensus-built design. In production, Design Cloud helped\nmanagers keep the process on track for completion within the\nexpected schedule.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The accepted design opens up the main space for the Harkin Digital Commons. Instead of linear rows of computers, triangular Collab\u00ae Computer Conference Tables provide a more conducive workflow. With their equilateral design, the aisleways created by the shapes offer mobility and easier access to computers. The broad aisles conform to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations for access everywhere in the space. When communicating in small groups, students can select a corner of the table to congregate around and spin an iMac into position to share the centrally located webcam.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAdditionally, small study carrels are no\nlonger necessary for one-on-one interaction\nthrough webcams; the lines of the table offer\npersonal computer space when preferred.\nThe larger aisleways provide enough physical\nspace to enable signing communication to take\nplace without the visual noise characteristic\nof the old linear table arrangement. Each\nwebcam is positioned to focus on the main\nuser; users at other computer stations face\nthe opposite direction and their signing is\nblocked from sight, which offers a focused\nlearning environment. With open space,\nflexible group arrangement, and one-to-one\nprivacy, the new computer lab was a success.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Comprehensive Wire\nManagement<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCable management presented a significant\nchallenge for Gallaudet\u2019s team. The\nUniversity had retrofitted a raised access floor\nso power and data could be routed under the\nfloor, but this did not address the unwieldy\nsnarl of cables that spilled from the back\nof each table. To remedy this, the Collab\u00ae\ntable design offered a large 18 inch diameter\ncenter column for routing power and data\ncables from the floor to the technology in the\ntable. A large hatch on the column provided\nready IT access and routed power and data\nfrom the access floor to the base of the table.\nThe visual clutter vanished.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNext came the challenge of power\/data\nconnector boxes for their furniture. The\nexisting connector boxes opened to a small\ntrough without sufficient room to plug in\nlaptop power transformers, and the Gallaudet\ntechnology team wanted receptacles accessible\nfrom the top, but presented in an unobtrusive\nway. The company and Gallaudet designed a\nfixed, decorative cap where simple power\/data\nboxes could be mounted. The connection boxes\nthe company offers and Gallaudet selected are\nusually mounted under the table, but after conferring on design, both parties agreed that\nmounting them in a central position behind the\niMac\u00ae screens would be visually quieter. The\ncompany designed this modification especially\nfor Gallaudet.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

With all of the triangular tables in the room, Gallaudet still needed some rectangular tables with built-in wire management. A line of Nesta\u2122 tables was placed in front of the Harkin\u2019s glass wall. This placement opens the room and gives easy access to the iMac\u00ae computer stations. The lighting from the windows sets up an aesthetic backdrop for the built-in web cams. Because studies have shown that people perform better and experience increased focus when standing, students work at these stations while on foot. Those who wish to sit may do so at the Collab\u00ae tables. Because churn rate is high in this area, the idea of standing for a short, focused time is a practical way of giving greater access to more students.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAt the ends of this arrangement are Cirrus\u2122\nSeries motorized adjustable height tables.\nThese tables quickly adjust with a touch of a\nbutton and accommodate a variety of users and\nworking styles, including people in wheelchairs.\nCirrus\u2122 adjustable height tables are available\nwith ratchet adjustment, spring pin and floating counterbalance. Gallaudet selected the\nmotorized version. It is not only adjustable\nwith the press of a button, but heights can also\nbe stored in memory to accommodate those\nwho return on a routine basis.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHarkin\u2019s teleconferencing suite also needed\na complete redesign. The walls featured large\nwhiteboards, a large video display and a single\ncamera. A cluttered U-shaped arrangement\nof rectangular tables made communication\ndifficult and it was difficult for all participants\nto see and be seen. The new table design, the\nPiano\u2122 5 Computer Conference Table, offered\na wire management solution, a collaborative\nshape for telepresence, and a secure place to\nstore laptops when not in use. \t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe Piano\u2019s unique geometry and scale\nworked well for the unusually shaped room.\nSix flipIT Laptop Safes\u00ae were added to store\nthe laptops securely when they were out of use.\nGallaudet\u2019s MacBooks securely stow under\nthe flipIT\u2019s locking lid. The laptops remain\nconnected to power and data while in use or\nwhen stowed. The profile of the lid is lower\nthan the laptop screen, so participants can\ncommunicate without visual obstruction. The\nPiano\u2019s hinged lid and technology well neatly\nhide wires and small components. The result:\na clean looking studio set that frames people\u2019s\nfaces for visual interaction in the room and on\ncamera.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe Harkin Digital Commons Learning\nCenter has proved a resounding success for the\nstudents and faculty. Due to the upgrades to\nthe facility, the room is always near capacity\nwith negligible down time. The excellent\ndesign reflects a synergistic collaboration with\nthe Design Team and Gallaudet University\u2019s\ncommitment to create the foremost learning\nenvironment for people who are deaf or hard\nof hearing.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
